Covid-19 in Ontario: another 66 dead, hospitalizations drop
TORONTO – Covid-19, the trend of the last few days is reconfirmed: hospitalizations in constant decline, death curve in continuous and decisive rise: today the victims in Ontario were 66, bringing the total from the beginning of the pandemic to 11,944. On the other hand, 2,059 people are currently in hospital with Covid-19, a sharp decline from the 2,254 on Tuesday. The number of people in intensive care has also fallen from 474 to 449.
Among other things, as already reiterated in recent days, only 56% of the hospitalized are in hospital due to Covid-19, while 44% have been covered for other reasons and then tested positive for the virus. For intensive care, the percentages are 80% hospitalized for Covid and 20% hospitalized with Covid.
As regards the trend of infections, today in Ontario 3,162 were detected – but the tests are reserved only for the “at risk” categories – out of a total of 22,906 processed swabs: the provincial positivity is now 11.9 %.
In the Greater Toronto Area, provincial health officials found 482 new cases in Toronto, 283 in the Peel region, 146 in the Durham region, 143 in the York region and 83 in the Halton region. Another 244 in Ottawa, 150 in Simcoe-Muskoka, 139 in Hamilton, 128 in Middlesex-London, 123 in the Niagara region and 103 in Windsor-Essex. All other areas reported fewer than 100 new cases.
Among the new infections, also those in long-term care homes were recorded by personnel: 118 among the residents and 45 between health workers, in facilities throughout Ontario. 14 of today’s 66 deaths involve long-term care residents. 256 nursing homes are currently facing a Covid-19 outbreak.
The pandemic healings, today, were 4,992: the total number of healed from the beginning is 1,019,277, while the total of cases confirmed in the laboratory is 1,061,403. There are 30,182 active and known cases in Ontario.
Also in Quebec today there was a new decline in hospitalizations for Covid-19: 210 people were discharged and 178 were covered, so the total number of hospitalizations dropped to 2,348. ICU cases also decreased by 7 from the previous day, for a total of 171 people in ICU beds.
But the French-speaking province also continues to add new deaths per day: another 31 today, for a total of 13,582 since the start of the pandemic. There are 3,361 new infections out of 28,296 samples analyzed – even if the tests are accessible only to “at risk” categories, so the real number of cases is not clear -: the positivity rate slightly increased to 11.5%, as well as the active (and known) cases which are now 34,275 (+315 compared to Tuesday).
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 889,057 infections have been recorded in Quebec and 841,200 people have recovered.
