One of the policemen dove into the pool got her out and applied CPR. After the emergency medical team arrived, the girl was immediately taken to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the circumstances of her death.
Prior to the arrival of the police and medical services, according to information from a neighbour on CP24 television, a woman was walking around knocking door to door, informing that a small child was missing asking to check if the girl was at their property. Soon after that, a police helicopter arrived on the scene.
The owner of the house where the drowning took place told CTV News that she was organizing a birthday party for her 5-year-old daughter. When the guests realized that a 6-year-old girl was missing, they did not see her in the pool and thought she was somewhere else on the property.
The police spotted the girl at the bottom of the swimming pool more than an hour after guests realized that she was missing.
Durham Police expressed their full support to the family for this tragedy. Police recommend that during the summer months, all families observe strict water safety measures.
