TORONTO – Justin Trudeau ha offerto ieri alla House of Commons le scuse ufficiali per il trattamento subito dalla comunità italocanadese negli Anni Quaranta. Il mea culpa recitato dal primo ministro per le decisioni prese dal governo dell’epoca guidato da William Lyon Mackenzie King non si è limitato, come era prevedibile, alla narrazione della sofferenza e delle ingiustizie subite da più di 600 uomini e donne di origine italiana internati nei campi di concentramento sparsi per il Paese, ma ha sfiorato tutte le corde del travaglio e delle tribolazioni patiti da tutti gli italocanadesi a partire del giugno del 1940.

TORONTO – Justin Trudeau today offered at the House of Commons an official apology for the treatment of the Italian-Canadian community in the 1940s. The mea culpa recited by the Prime Minister for the decisions taken by the government of the time led by William Lyon Mackenzie King was not limited, as was to be expected, to the narrative of the suffering and injustice suffered by 600 men and four women of Italian origin interned in concentration camps scattered throughout the country, but touched all the strings of labour and tribulations suffered by all Italian Canadians since June 1940. Internment of Canadians of Italian descent, Deb Schulte: “An exciting historical moment”
The long-awaited official apology has finally arrived. Today, as promised in 2019, the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, apologized to the Italian-Canadians for the internment suffered in World War II. More than 600 Italian-Canadians were interned after Italy declared war on the Allies in 1940, while 31,000 people were reported as “foreign enemies”. Continue reading→

On Thursday, health officials in the Philippines logged 6,483 new infections bringing the total caseload to more than 1.2 million since the start of the pandemic. Of that cumulative total, 94.3% are considered recovered. In the last 24-hours, the Department of Health reported an increase of 210 Covid-related deaths.

“Living to work” can have fatal risks
A growing body of data suggests that overtime and long working hours adversely affect the health and well-being of workers. A new global study finds working more than 55 hours per week increases a persons risk of stroke and heart disease.
According to a systematic analysis from the World Health Organization and International Labour Organization (WHO/ILO), latest estimates suggest long working hours killed three quarters of a million people in 2016, up 29% from 2000.
