Candice Bergen: “Italians and Italian-Canadians have been making incredible contributions to Canada”
OTTAWA – The Hon. Candice Bergen (in the pic), Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and the Official Opposition, invites to celebrate Italian Heritage Month, starting today.
“In 1497, Giovanni Caboto, better known to Canadians as John Cabot, landed on the east coast of North America, becoming the first Italian to visit what is now Canada”, Bergen writes in her statement.
“Ever since Cabot’s iconic journey – she says – Italians and Italian-Canadians have been making incredible contributions to Canada, helping to build it into the strong country it is today”.
“Over five hundred years later, our country is proud to be home to over 1.5 million Italian-Canadians, who remain deeply connected to their history and heritage. In June, Canada celebrates Italian Heritage Month as a time to showcase the culture of the Italian-Canadian community, and to honour their achievements”.
“Our country has been incredibly blessed by Italian art, literature, food and philosophy. The beauty of Italian culture is celebrated all over the world, and has become deeply embedded as a part of Canada’s national fabric”.
“As Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, I invite all Canadians to learn more about the heritage of Italian-Canadians and the inspiring role they have played in our history”.
“Happy Italian Heritage Month!”, Bergen concludes.
