Housing, the government negotiates with “rebel” Alberta

OTTAWA – Yet another “trouble” for Justin Trudeau’s government: the premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, intends to adopt the Quebec model of federal-provincial relations when it comes to issues such as housing (so essentially, she wants greater freedom of action), and the federal housing minister, the liberal Sean Fraser, is forced to declare his willingness to “negotiate” with the (conservative) premier of Alberta. 

Canada, more than 13 thousand assisted deaths in one year

TORONTO – In 2022, 13,241 Canadians chose assisted death. An impressive number, especially when compared to California, where a very similar bill system is in force: in the same year, there were 853 assisted deaths in the American state. The data emerges from a study by Adrian C. Byram of “End of Life Choices”, California, and Peter B. Reyner of the Department of Psychiatry of the University of British Columbia (the whole research is here: Disparities in public awareness, practitioner availability, and institutional support contribute to differential rates of MAiD utilization: a natural experiment comparing California and Canada). 

Quebec, Legault threatens ‘referendum’ on immigration and “on other subjects”

QUEBEC – “Referendum”. A word that, associated with “Quebec”, makes the Canadian federal government tremble. It was pronounced on Tuesday by the Premier of Quebec, François Legault, who once again asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reduce the number of temporary immigrants in the province, threatening to hold a “referendum” on the issue and, maybe “on other subjets”.
