Laurentian University, hands off from the Italian Studies

[GTranslate]TORONTO – Teachers and students from Laurentian University’s Italian Studies program are on the ropes, since the university declared a state of insolvency on February 10th, citing more than 300 million in debt, they have certainly not slept soundly.

An Application for Judicial Review (JR) between Michael Del Grande and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) has been filed in Divisional Court. Understandably, it took a while to materialize in its final version.

In its reading, it resembles a thin veil pulled back that reveals the governance rot beneath the surface that has been afflicting Catholic education boards and the TCDSB in particular. Catholic Schools can [finally] take a victory lap

[GTranslate]TORONTO – February 25, 2021. Thursday’s Supreme Court of Canada (SOC) decision re the Theodore school question in Saskatchewan offers an insight into constitutionally guaranteed denominational rights and the primacy of the Constitution over subordinate (inferior) legislation.

Lawyers will rush to “differentiate” the issues under consideration and the consequential implications. It is what they are trained to do – much like critics who “parse” sentences and literary works. (more…)

Desde el inicio del 2021, Canadá comenzó a exigir que todos los residentes y viajeros presenten una prueba negativa de Covid-19 antes de su salida a Canadá. Pero desde México, que forma junto a Canadá y Estados Unidos el tratado comercial T-MEC, y los países del Caribe no hay siquiera vuelos.

El primer ministro canadiense, Justin Trudeau, anunció las nuevas restricciones de viaje diciendo que todas las aerolíneas, incluyendo Air Canada, estuvieron de acuerdo en cancelar “todos los destinos del Caribe y México” hasta el 30 de abril. (more…)

FILIPINO-CANADIAN ON (TCDSB) TORONTO CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD.

Once, during a religious seminar I participated in, the issue of Filipino parents sending their children came into focus. I admit, having been involved in the media for most of my Canadian life, this issue never came up in my front burner. I have always regarded it as a given in the Filipino immigrants’ life to send their child or children to a Catholic school. And I assumed that Canadians knew the Catholic background of the Philippines. (more…)
