Ontario holds up: the average of new cases falls
TORONTO – The trend now seems to be the same: new daily cases between 700 and 800, the vast majority of which in unvaccinated people. Ontario recorded 715 new cases (and 6 deaths) today, with the seven-day moving average of new cases now standing at 709, down from Saturday (719) when there were 821 infections.
Of today’s cases, detected on 29,906 tests carried out for a positive rate of 2.3%, 440 concerned unvaccinated people and 44 partially vaccinated people. Another 175 involved fully vaccinated people and 56 people with unknown vaccination status.
There are now 6,396 active cases known across Ontario, while there are 9,653 deaths recorded since the start of the pandemic. Of the active cases, 185 are hospitalized in intensive care (-3 compared to Saturday and -7 compared to a week ago).
As for the territorial distribution of the new cases today, Toronto recorded 139, Peel 59 and the York region 68, the Halton region 26, Durham 19 and Hamilton 68.
On the vaccine front, 21,387,650 doses were administered in Ontario, with an increase of 29,975 (11,100 first doses and 18,875 second doses). Now in the province 85% of people over the age of 12 have received at least one dose of the vaccine and nearly 78.9% are fully vaccinated.
In Quebec, another 742 people tested positive today: 513 were unvaccinated, 39 received a dose more than two weeks ago, and 190 were double-vaccinated more than seven days before testing positive. Another 43 people were admitted to Quebec hospitals and 30 were discharged. Of the new patients, 26 are not vaccinated, one received one dose of the vaccine more than 14 days ago, and 16 received both doses more than seven days ago. The hospitalizations have thus increased by 13 with 277 patients now receiving treatment in the hospitals of the province. Of these, 87 are in intensive care units (-2).
On the immunization front, 83% of the Quebec population received two doses of the vaccine (6,203,929 people). Since the start of the pandemic, 403,025 people in Quebec have tested positive for the new coronavirus. The province also added another 4 deaths to the total tally which is now 11,325.
For many provinces of Canada, public holiday data is not available and reference should be made to the latest numbers provided before the weekend as in the case of Alberta where the situation, with 2,020 cases registered on Friday, is dramatic.
88 new cases (with 1 death) reported on Friday in Manitoba: 53 are in unvaccinated people, 12 in partially vaccinated individuals and 23 in fully vaccinated individuals. Only 5% of hospitalized patients are fully vaccinated and none of them are in intensive care.
In British Columbia, health officials recorded 768 new cases and 11 deaths on Friday. There are currently 6,031 active cases of infected people in the province: 298 are in hospital, 135 in intensive care. Overall hospitalizations increased by 6% from last Friday, when 281 people were hospitalized with the disease, and about 168% from a month ago when 111 people were in the hospital.
For Saskatchewan, data is available from Saturday, when 499 new cases and 1 death were reported. 228 people are currently hospitalized, the highest number since last February 3, when there were 229 hospitalizations. Of the 228 people now hospitalized, 172 are not fully vaccinated 51 people in intensive care, just below the peak this year (52) recorded on 23 April. The seven-day moving average of new cases is now 467 per day: a month ago it was 123.
