Ontario: the virus kills another 16, hospitalizations drop
TORONTO – Covid-19, another 16 deaths today in Ontario – like Tuesday: but, contrary to what was announced last week, also today the provincial health authorities didn’t specify how many of these deaths occurred for or with Covid-19 The total number of the victims of the virus in Ontario, since the beginning of the pandemic, therefore for the moment being sold at 12,288.
On the other hand, hospitalizations are decreasing: from 688 hospitalized on Tuesday, they fell to 649 today, including 204 patients (yesterday there were 220) in intensive care: the number of people hospitalized in ICU with Covid-19 is the lowest seen from the end of 2021.
Among other things, only 47% of the 649 people admitted to hospital are there because of the virus, while the remaining 53% were hospitalized for other reasons but tested positive for the entrance test. For intensive care, the percentages are 79% for Covid-19 and 21% for Covid-19.
On the contagion front, 2,011 new cases were recorded today out of 15,702 tests (reserved, we remind you, only for the “at risk” categories) processed in the last 24 hours: the positivity rate is 12%. In the Greater Toronto Area, officials reported 327 new cases in Toronto, 183 in the Peel region, 102 in the York region, 101 in the Durham region and 46 in the Halton region. 123 new cases were also detected in Ottawa, 103 in Simcoe Muskoka and 109 in the Kingston area. All other areas reported fewer than 100 new cases. 2,060 healings today, bringing the number of patients healed in Ontario, in total, to 1,101,842, while the total number of pandemic cases confirmed in the laboratory since the beginning is 1,129,543. The active and known cases in Ontario are now, official, 15,413.
Many deaths today also for Quebec: 11 deaths, bringing the total in the province from the pandemic to 14,213. However, there was a decrease of 9 patients in hospitals, for a total of 1,073 hospitalizations related to the disease (67 people were hospitalized and 76 were discharged). 56 patients in intensive care (-10).
The province reported 1,380 new infections but the scarcity of tests carried out does not allow to have a real picture of the situation which instead is given by the do-it-yourself tests self-declared by the citizens in the specific portal opened by the Quebec government: today they entered the results of 447 rapid tests and 359 were positive. Given the proportion, it is certain that the total number of active cases in Quebec is far higher than the 12,704 resulting from the “official” tests. Since the start of the pandemic, Quebec has recorded 939,650 coronavirus cases and 912,733 recoveries.
Hospitalizations in Alberta are rising again: the province had just dropped (Monday) below one thousand but on Tuesday the number of hospitalized people rose from 986 to 1,001, of which 70 in intensive care (-3). Another 4 deaths on Tuesday, with the total rising to 4,025. There are 6,422 active and known cases. Since the start of the pandemic, 532,571 infections and 522,124 healings have been recorded in Alberta.
