Surge of infections: almost a thousand cases in Ontario, 1,000 new daily infections in Quebec in the weekend
TORONTO – Despite the snow has whitened everything, it was a black weekend in Ontario on the Covid front. Today 964 new cases were registered, the highest number reported in a single day since last May 30, when 1,033 cases were detected. But Saturday and Friday wasn’t better, with – respectively – 854 and 927 infections. Now the seven-day moving average is 760, last week it was 645. And the positivity rate also rises: with 29,692 tests processed in the last 24 hours and 964 cases detected, it is now 3.2%.
Of the cases recorded today in Ontario, 498 were detected in unvaccinated individuals, 396 in fully vaccinated, and 21 in partially vaccinated. The vaccination status of the remaining 49 cases is unknown.
122 people are hospitalized with Covid-19 and 135 are in intensive care.
Today there was also a death that brings the total since the beginning of the pandemic in Ontario to a quota of ten thousand: 9,994.
As for the territorial distribution of cases, most were recorded in Toronto (129), Windsor-Essex (86) and Simcoe Muskoka (81). Meanwhile, the situation is also worsening in Quebec where more than 1,000 new daily cases of Covid-19 were recorded on Friday and Saturday and today another 875 people tested positive for the virus: of the latter, 483 people are not vaccinated, 13 received a vaccine dose and 379 received two.
There have been no new deaths due to the disease in the province (the total therefore remains at 11,574), but hospitalizations have increased by 11 with 24 people admitted to Quebec hospitals and 13 discharged. Of the 24 new patients, 17 are not vaccinated, 1 received one dose of the vaccine and 6 received two. There are 48 patients in intensive care (same number).
The province’s vaccination rate is 85% for those who received one dose of the vaccine and 81% for those who received both doses.
