Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – Emergency calls were not guaranteed during the Rogers “black out” two weeks ago. A very serious thing. An issue that the company, Rogers Communications Inc., is “trying to remedy” to ensure that emergency calls can always be made and that “no future disruption cancels cellular and internet services anymore”. TORONTO – The Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC) made a call about “monkeypox”, asking to protect and uphold human rights during the outbreak. In a statement, OHRC writes that “as the world grapples with the ongoing “monkeypox” outbreak, several very concerning human rights issues have been exposed”.
In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the pandemic caused by Covid 19, forcing people to change their priorities. Trips to the restaurants, vacations to exotic places, watching movies in the big screen took a back seat. They redirected their money and whatever else they earned working from home to renovating their dwellings to double as an office and classroom, purchasing newer laptops and newer models of mobiles, putting new printers in their bedrooms to make for more efficient work output at home, getting gym equipment for fitness because gyms were closed, and furnishing their kitchens with mixers, blenders and juice extractors to make their lives livable during a pandemic. They alternated their meals from being prepared in their kitchen to ordering from restaurants, delivered by any one of the following: Uber Eats, Grab, Skip the Dishes, Foodora, Door Dash, to name a few. Lifestyles changed.
TORONTO – Rule number one: it’s not my fault. In the chaos in which Ontario’s Education sector finds itself, characterized by accusations, invective, controversies, complaints, retaliation and divisions, we have witnessed the most classic blame game on the responsibilities in a situation that is becoming unsustainable, especially in the Toronto Catholic District School Board. To try to understand what is happening, we must necessarily start from a fact: starting from October 12 there has been a merger of dozens of classes in many schools of the Catholic Board, with the consequent increase in the number of students in the individual classrooms. TORONTO – A friend once commented on the price of a Big Mac, that if you eat it regularly, like once a week, you don’t notice the price increase because it’s in the cents. But, if you order it, say, once every six months, or in my case, in a gap of almost two years because of the pandemic, you feel the crunch, as I did when I ordered two Big Mac meals three weeks ago. I paid $23 and some cents! My friend then added, it’s good if you have the coupon because you pay just a little over half of the regular price. The question that begs answering is, how often does Big Mac come up with coupons. (more…)
