Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Francis (Frank) Leo (in the pic above, from www.archtoronto.org), currently Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Montreal, as the 14th Archbishop of Toronto. The archbishop-designate succeeds Cardinal Thomas Collins, who has served the archdiocese since 2007.
TORONTO – John Tory, now former mayor of Toronto, resigned his post Friday in what appeared to be a hastily put together announcement/press conference. For those with short memory-spans, Mr. Tory won the election held last October 24 (three months ago) by such a wide margin that he might as well have been acclaimed .
TORONTO – Canada Revenue Agency calls you if $10 is “missing” (and if you don’t pay immediately, interest will kick in) but doesn’t think it’s worth recovering $15 billion. Incredible but true, so much so that even the “watchdog” of Canadian finances, Parliamentary Budget Officer Yves Giroux, said he was bewildered to hear the head of the CRA say that it was not “worth” recovering all that money, i.e. the $15.5 billion in potential Covid-19 wage subsidy overpayments. In other words, money ended up in the pockets of those who had no right to receive it. →
TORONTO – Will it be for transparency or, perhaps, will it be to justify the fact that rates continue to be increased even if the effects on inflation (which was supposed to fall to 2% and which is still over 6%) are not seen? Maybe.
TORONTO – “Out of the blue”, Google and the tech giants are pushing back against Government initiatives to redress the imbalances created by the global digital empires among national and local communications enterprises.
