Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – What happened to three teachers on the York Region District School Board seems surreal. The teachers who have chosen to buy and wear N95 masks in class say they have been threatened with disciplinary sanctions because only the use of blue surgical masks – the least protective ones, to be clear – supplied to the school board is allowed. →
TORONTO – For the first time during this school year, an entire high school in Etobicoke – the Silverthorn Collegiate Institute – has been closed by Toronto Public Health (TPH) following a Covid-19 outbreak. →
EDMONTON – Alberta and Saskatchewan are collapsing. On Tuesday, Alberta reported 1,246 new cases of Covid-19 and another 18 deaths, following the weekend’s thousands of new infections; Saskatchewan also recorded 446 new infections and 10 new deaths. Numbers too high, in relation to the population of the two provinces (4,371,000 the first, 1,174,000 the second). And, as we have already written several times in the last few days, the hospitals of both are at the limit. →
TORONTO – Infections are rising and schools are closing. As expected, the return to school is not spinning as smooth as oil. Today the school boards of the province reported 286 active cases of Covid, an increase of 97% compared to the day before while entire classes were given the order to stay at home in quarantine. →
MONTREAL – Is Canada the most multiethnic and multicultural country in the world? Yes, at first glance. But then, if you don’t live here and try to enter, legally, you realize that the “Welcome to Canada” is just a beautiful fairy tale, especially in Quebec where you clash with harsh reality as happened to Giovanni Liotti, 23, student from Avellino who left Italy yesterday to visit a friend in Montreal and today was forced to leave for Italy after a seventeen-hour odyssey at the airport. →
