Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – Mary Simon (in the pic) is Canada’s new Governor General. This was announced today by Justin Trudeau, who, with the appointment of the Queen’s new representative, wanted to send out a very precise political signal. Simon is in fact an Inuk leader, representative of the indigenous peoples of Canada and his appointment comes at a time of general rethinking of the history of our country, in particular the federal government’s treatment of Aboriginal people in the past. For the first time in the history of Canada, an indigenous person is called to fill the role of governor general: she is Mary Simon, Inuk leader and former diplomat. Her appointment, announced today by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec, was approved by Queen Elizabeth (the office of governor general is in a representative function of Her Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in Canada).
