The year 2020 presented several challenges for companies struggling to survive amidst the global pandemic. However, some business have been able to weather the storm despite one of the steepest drops in Canada’s real GDP on record.

In 2019, the country reported a real GDP of roughly $1.64 Trillion (T). In 2020, that figure dropped to $1.57 T, a difference of more than $70 Billion. While Canadians continue to work at regaining those losses, some businesses have managed to prosper throughout the pandemic-induced instability.

Financial gains for Ontario’s growing “Sunshine List”

[GTranslate]TORONTO – Each year, the Ontario government releases the names and salaries of public sector employees who cross the $100,000 threshold in earnings, otherwise known as the “Sunshine List”. The annual list, released March 19, includes a number of public sector servants (nurses, teachers, police officers, firefighters, etc.) who earn a six-figure salary.

This year’s Sunshine list is bigger than ever. Despite record unemployment levels and full-scale lockdowns prompted by measures to reduce the spread of Covid-19, the past year has been a fruitful one 206,606 public sector employees.
In 2020, the number of names on the list increased by 23% from 166,977 in 2019. (more…)

New Canadian Politics poll; a look at the Conservative Party’s challenge: growing support

[GTranslate]A new poll on Canada’s political environment, based on a survey of 2,000 Canadians conducted on Wednesday, is out.

The Conservative Convention began on Thursday, and an update on Conservative Party supporters and the path to victory is available at https://abacusdata.ca/conservative-party-canada-gap/.

Summary:

The federal Liberals lead the Conservatives by four seats, with the NDP remaining unchanged.
Liberals have 33 seats, Conservatives have 29, and the NDP has one.
On a regional basis, we see a close three-way race in British Columbia, broad Conservative leads in the Prairies, a 13-point Liberal lead in Ontario, a 7-point Liberal lead over the PQ in Quebec, and a 21-point Liberal lead in Atlantic Canada.
