The world’s wealthiest are responsible for nearly 50% of carbon emissions


There has been a concentrated international effort to combat climate change. One main focus is on the cutting of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), carbon dioxide (CO2) being one of main culprits. But where do these emissions come from and who is responsible for the majority of carbon emissions?

According to the World Inequality Report 2022 (December 2021), data analysis by a team of world-leading economists suggests that the richest 10% of the global population produces close to 50% of GHG.

Covid, nearly 800 cases and 6 deaths in Ontario

TORONTO – After the temporary decline recorded Tuesday, today the growth of infections in Ontario resumed, as already recorded in the previous days: the province has in fact 780 new infections (and another 6 deaths). Going backwards, the infections had been: 687 Tuesday, 788 Monday, 964 Sunday and 854 Saturday. A week ago, last Wednesday, they were 591. The seven-day moving average of new cases reaches 821: a significant increase compared to a week ago (686) and, above all, the highest average since last June 4 when it was 844. The positivity rate also continues to grow: with 35,300 tests processed in the last 24 hours and 780 infections, the index is now 3.1%, compared to 2.5% a week ago. 

Ontario, cases continue to rise: today nearly 700

TORONTO – The escalation continues: after the 486 cases on Tuesday and 660 on Wednesday, Ontario today recorded 678 new cases of Covid-19, of which 395 were found in unvaccinated people, 82 in partially vaccinated people and 141 in people fully vaccinated (for the remaining people the vaccination status is unknown). Of the new cases, 144 were recorded in Toronto, 102 in the Peel region, 97 in the York region, 78 in Windsor-Essex and 51 in the Durham region. All other local health units reported fewer than 50 new cases.
