Is Ontario’s critical care system prepared for a surge in cases?


The Covid-19 pandemic has presented challenges for Ontario’s critical care system. As infections trend upward, the scientific community cautions that hospital admissions will likely climb in the weeks to come.

On December 6, the Ministry of Health reported 168 patients in the province’s Intensive Care Units (ICU) due to Covid-related critical illness. That is the highest number of Covid-related ICU patients in more than two months, when the number reached 171 Covid ICU patients on September 30.

Health system to improve in Ontario, doctors indicate priorities

TORONTO – Reduce patient waiting times, expand mental health, addiction and home care services, and prepare for the next pandemic. These are some of the priorities to be addressed in the Ontario health system contained in a new report by the Ontario Medical Association (OMA). The study also highlighted the need to strengthen public health units in light of the important role played during the pandemic and to assign each patient a team of connected health workers.

The Ontario government has lifted capacity limits and made life a little easier for some establishments like restaurants, gyms and event spaces. Unfortunately, the provincial government has failed to meet the needs of individual with disabilities and specifically those unable to be vaccinated for Covid-19.

Establishments that require proof of Covid-19 vaccination remain inaccessible to marginalized groups. Their plight appears to be ignored when it comes to officials responsible in making policy decisions.

Groups call on Canada to phase out its immigrant detention system

In a joint report, human rights organizations denounced abuses in Canadian detention centers and prisons, and noted discrimination against people with mental discapacities. Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International assure that the conditions faced by many migrants, who after fleeing their country and requesting protection in Canada, “are regularly handcuffed and kept with little or no contact with the outside world.”
