Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
MANILA – The Philippines which relies on tourism to boost its economy is hit hard by the pandemic. Tourism-related employment in this Far East country shrank by 28 percent, while average hourly wage declined by 38%. I was in the Philippines last March 2020 when the pandemic broke out. And I noticed the absence of tourists in Metro Manila. The perception seemed to be that with the source of Covid 19 being in Asia, no one wanted to be in that continent.

The ups and down of the last two years may have many of us thinking it’s time to take a break and get away. However, the rise in Covid infections, the constantly changing requirements for travel and fears of getting stuck in a foreign country have many of us opting for a vacation destination closer to home. The year is drawing to a close and so too is the holiday season and all the craziness of 2021. From Covid-19 infections and its multiple mutations to catastrophic heat waves and deadly floods, it has been a tumultuous year. With 2022 around the corner, people are hoping for better days ahead and dreaming of that much needed getaway to escape all the mayhem.
