Welcome to the Canadian National Multilingual News Group (CNMNG). This is a project made possible through funding by Canadian Heritage. CNMNG aims to gather news researched and written by a corps of Canadian-based journalists/writers from the country’s multilingual community groups. The overall goal is to inform, analyze and critique the issues of the day in a professional manner and to provide that to publishers and editors active in the ethnocultural-multilingual press and media whose experience provides them with a perspective that is sensitive to news relevant to their own language group.
TORONTO – This has to have been one of the sleepiest election campaigns in Ontario’s provincial electoral history. The first clue is the over-dependence on “sloganeering” in lieu of discussions that capture the essence of the province we want to build and how we plan to do it.
The provincial electoral district of Thunder Bay – Atikokan (TBA) is situated just west of Thunder Bay – Superior North along the north shore of Lake Superior. Located about 1,600km northwest of the capital, by car it would take about 18 hours (nonstop) to reach Ottawa.
The district covers an area of 25,600 square km (about the same size as Sicily). It encompasses the town of Atikokan and the south side of the City of Thunder Bay. The oddly shaped riding dips south to the Canada/US boundary. (more…)
TORONTO – ‘Comites’ elections in Toronto, there are the results: of the 12 seats available, 6 go to the list of the outgoing president Michela Di Marco, “Uniti per la Comunità 2021”, the remaining 6 are equally divided between the other two lists: “l’Italia che ci lega” and the civic list “Italiani in Canada”. In fact, therefore, there is parity between the winning list and the other two who with their elected representatives (3 + 3) reach the same number (6) as the representatives of the first list. TORONTO – More than two months before the vote, the first session of the House of Commons will take place tomorrow. The parliamentary agenda for this week of work is already well defined. The first institutional step, which will be carried out tomorrow, is the election of the new Speaker of the Chamber. According to the Parliamentary Rules of Procedure, all MPs are formally candidates for the presidency of the House of Commons unless they indicate a will to the contrary. The big favorite on the eve is the Italian Canadian Anthony Rota, already Speaker in the past legislature who enjoys a bipartisan consensus that bypasses the traditional party divisions. (more…)
TORONTO – On November 3, 2020, Republican David Andahl won the election for a seat in the North Dakota Legislature. Voters gave him 36 percent of the vote, enough for the candidate to win the election. And this despite the fact that Andahl had died of Covid a month earlier, on October 5. The electorate, in order not to vote for the other candidates, preferred to elect the one who had already passed to a better life. In the last federal election in the Spadina-Fort York district we witnessed something similar. (more…)
