UFOs over Canada, hundreds of sightings in 2023: 33.3% in Quebec
WINNIPEG – Hundreds of official UFO sightings in Canada every year. According to a new survey from Ufology Research, 570 Canadians have officially filed reports of UFO sightings in 2023. And among these reports, about 6% refer to “unexplained” events. The sightings had two “peaks” in particular: in the months of February and August, the reports increased exponentially.
Chris Rutkowski, a science writer specializing in UAP (also known as “unidentified aerial phenomenon”), says – according to CTV – that the number of reports filed is “significant” and “demonstrates that people continue to see ‘things’ in the sky above Canada. From one coast to the other.”
Although the number of official reports has decreased from 2022’s 768 sightings, Rutkowski says that doesn’t mean fewer people are seeing UFOs. “The number of UFO sightings hasn’t actually decreased” he said. “What has happened is that there is less participation from some private UFO groups who are not sharing their information. So, this makes it difficult to do a study like this. But all other organizations that continued to participate showed a consistent trend in the number of UFO or UAP reports across Canada throughout 2023.”
According to the survey by Ufology Research (you can read the whole report here: Surveyessay2023), provinces with larger populations tend to have the highest number of UFO reports, but the survey itself records “anomalies”: at the top of the ranking in terms of number of UFO reports, there is in fact Quebec with 33.3% of the total, followed by Ontario (23.3%) and British Columbia (11.9%).
“Eastern Canada has more sightings than it should have based on its population. And Quebec seems to have more cases than other areas such as British Columbia and Ontario” said Rutkowski, but it is also true that Quebec is one of the provinces where there are ufological associations that are very active in collecting data.
As for the cities with the most sightings, here is the “top ten”: Montreal 42, Toronto 30, London 18, Vancouver 14, Halifax 11, Laval 11, Quebec City 11, Hamilton 9, Winnipeg 8, Calgary 7.
Rutkowski says the nearly 600 sightings nationwide last year represent a pattern that is holding steady. “I would say people are still very aware of objects in the sky and want others to be aware of them.”
